Battle Kart 64 is an exciting rom hack by Triclon for Mario Kart 64 that brings new features and options to the game’s Battle Mode. It is console compatible.

Game Modes:

An expanded traditional battle mode.
  • “Hot Potato” featuring a timer on whoever was hit last and counts down to zero. Whoever is the “hot potato” when the timer reaches zero loses 1 HP.
  • “Squish” where you need to hit, lightning shrink, and then run over the shrunken player to score.
  • “Capture The Flag” where you must capture a flag and bring it back to your base to score.
  • “Keep Away” where there is one flag to fight over and each player must try to hold onto it as long as possible.
Scoring Modes:
  • Stock scoring where you can now set set the number of hit points, instead of just having 3 balloons.
  • Point scoring for Capture the Flag and Keep Away
  • Timed matches where whoever has the least amount of hits or most points when the timer reaches zero wins. Ties go to sudden death.
  • Free for All (FFA) or Teams of 2 vs. 2 or 2 vs. 1 with both point and time scoring.
CPU bots in Battle Mode!
  • Now you can play battle mode by yourself..
  • A lot of work has gone into making bots that will actually track you down and aim their items at you..
  • Best played in Block Fort or Double Deck or on wide open race courses..
  • Now you can play 1 player in full screen if you are just playing against the bots.
All the race courses now will load in Battle Mode!
  • All 16 race courses can now be played in Battle Mode.
  • Great for Koopa Troopa Beach or Kalamari Desert.
Item toggling!
  • You can turn items on and off like in Super Smash Bros.
  • Hate stars? Just turn them off.
  • And a whole slew of other options!
  • Flat courses!
  • Ludicrous speed!
  • And more!!
Battle Kart 64 will continue to be under active development so the future will bring even more game modes and features.

Battle Santa 64

Battle Santa 64 is a special 2023 Christmas single player version of Battle Kart 64 that follows the tradition of the OverKart 64 Christmas Mod.

In Battle Santa 64, you play as Santa Claus trying to take back the presents stolen by Bowser, Wario, and Donkey Kong. You have five minutes to collect as many as you can. They will run away so you will need to chase them down, hit them, and pick up the presents they drop. After five minutes you will see how many you have collected, what your high score is, and can restart by holding A and B simultaneously to try again.

Mario Kart 64: Death Race

Mario Kart 64: Death Race is rom hack for Mario Kart 64 inspired by the Death Race in F-Zero X. Each player gets 3 hit points (HP). Spin outs, hits, getting squished, or having Lakitu picking you up causes 1 HP worth of damage. If you have 1 HP left, you turn dark to indicate one more hit will kill you so be careful. Lose all your HP, you are dead, and the course restarts in GP mode. The race will not end until one player is left standing. Kill all the players and you win, and you go to the next course in GP mode. Death Race is playable in both GP and VS modes. Console compatible. Expansion pak required. Use “CPUs use human items” patch for more of a challenge. Use “Wii” patch for playing on Wii emulators. See readme for more details.

The patches were created by injecting the MK64 rom with the N64 Gameshark Code Injector.

CPUs Use Human Items

This patch for Mario Kart 64 (USA/NTSC) gives the CPUs in Grand Prix mode some of the same items a human can use. CPUs can finally fire shells, use multibananas, and triple mushrooms. Normally CPUs can only use single bananas, stars, ghosts, fake item boxes, single mushroom boosts, and lightning. They spawn the items all at the same time up to three times per lap and draw from their own item probability tables. With these new items the CPUs can use against you, GP mode is now more challenging! CPUs never used shells, multi-bananas, triple mushrooms, or golden mushrooms. Through an exhaustive look into the game’s code, micro500 and I were able to deduce how CPU players spawn items. It turns out that a lot of this code never made it into the final game, and has remained hidden for over 20 years in the inside the game’s rom. Some of it it was never fully debugged or finished. This patch takes most of the unused CPU item spawning code that works and adds it back into the game with some custom assembly code. See the readme.txt for more details.

I converted the CPUs use human items patch into a Gameshark code. This way you can easily add it to an emulator cheat list or combine it with other things using my Gameshark Code Injector.

Freeing Marty the Thwomp

In Mario Kart 64 there is a green thwomp mysteriously locked behind bars in Bowser’s Castle. He has been unofficially named Marty and has been the subject to longstanding rumors that he can actually be unlocked as a playable character. Several hoax and April fools joke images and videos have popped up over the years supposedly showing the convoluted things you need to do on the track in Bowser’s Castle to unlock Marty as a playable character. Well now you can finally race as him with this hack! This hack only works in Bowser’s Castle for Player 1 but it works for all engine classes and in both Time Trial and VS. mode (so you can play your friends as Marty).

This hack was originally a (long) gameshark code, and these patches were made using my Gameshark Code Injector. You can find the original gameshark code and explanations for how it works by clicking here. The code can be copied into your favorite emulator, or into a a real Gameshark if you have the patience you can type it.

Cup course locations in ROM originally found by Rena Kunisaki (also known as HyperHacker), translated to RAM by Triclon. Start on lap modifier also by Rena.

v1.0 (May 6, 2024) - Fixed addresses for Pal v1.0. I'm going to consider this the final version so made it v1.0.
v0.6 (April 24, 2024) - Now works for all the different US, PAL, and JPN rom versions of MK64. Just select the rom version.
v0.5 (August 19, 2019) - Added ability to modify battle courses and ability to use those slots for up to a 20 course cup. Added ability to set number of laps per course.
v0.4 (May 12, 2019) - Added buttons to return to the default course set and to randomize the courses.
